Valentine's Day and Your TeethWith Valentine’s Day upon us, candy and other sugary treats are sure to make the rounds this week. Like with any holiday involving delectable goodies, it’s once again time to remind all of our patients to be extra careful when choosing candies and treats to eat. While all those tasty sweets and sticky candies may taste delicious, they are known to cause damage to our teeth, especially for those wearing braces, retainers, etc. What most people don’t know, is that sour candies can be extremely acidic, which can cause the enamel on the teeth to wear down. This can lead to the formation of cavities and tooth decay. Other candies that can prove harmful to the teeth, such as starburst and skittles, have a low pH value, which can also deteriorate the enamel. At Bennett Family Dentistry, we recommend softer treats that melt in your mouth, like soft chocolate or peanut butter cups. If you plan to indulge, as many will, make sure to brush and floss throughout the day to avoid buildup of sugary debris. Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at Bennett Family Dentistry! Don’t forget to share the gift of a smile today. |
