The 95 in 95 Challenge was announced in March with a goal of raising $95,000 in 95 days following a $95,000 donation from an anonymous donor who expressed their desire that the donation be a challenge to the community to match the gift. “The 95 days actually ended on June 30, however, we have continued to see donations come in,” says Richard Bennett, DMD, president of the Good News Clinics’ board of directors. “Even in these uncertain times, we stand amazed at the outpouring of generosity in support of 95 in 95 campaign. On behalf of the GNC board and our patients, I would like to thank each donor, whether a first-timer or a long-time friend. Without your support, many would not have access to the basic healthcare that is essential to healthy, productive lives.” Funds from the 95 in 95 Challenge will go to support general operating expenses of the Clinics, which continues to see an increased demand for services as a result of the economic climate. “Our numbers are growing at the fastest rate in our history,” Bennett says. “Many of GNC’s new patients are individuals finding themselves unemployed or underemployed without healthcare benefits. For the first time in many folks’ lives, they do not have any type of healthcare coverage, or can no longer afford to pay for it out of pocket.” “Throughout the challenge, we continued to receive modest donations—many of them under $100—but, in the end, we met our overall goal, which demonstrates how a community coming together can make a difference,” says Cheryl Christian, executive director for Good News Clinics. “People would include notes with their check stating they wished they could do more, but what they gave will help more people than they realize.” Christian adds that the Clinics have had more than 300 new donors since December 2008. “Though we do not have exact figures, I know a high percentage of our new donors were a result of the 95 in 95 challenge,” she says.
