Oral Health During Your Pregnancy

During the excitement and joy of pregnancy there are so many changes happening in your life. It is important to pay special attention to your body, and even though you may not think so, your teeth need additional attention too. Because of changes in hormonal levels, dental problems can be intensified during pregnancy. Be sure to maintain good oral hygiene, both for your health and the health of the baby.

One of the most common problems associated with pregnancy is called pregnancy gingivitis and usually occurs during the first trimester. Gingivitis is characterized by bleeding, red, and tender gums. It’s easy to prevent by making sure to floss regularly and brush not only your teeth, but your gums.

Good oral hygiene is also connected to the health of your fetus. Recent studies have shown a possible connection between low birth weight or premature birth and periodontitis, an advanced stage of gum disease.

It's easy to keep good oral heath during pregnancy by following these steps.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and teeth cleaning. Your dentist can help you identify tooth problems before they get serious.
  • Brush your teeth twice a day to remove and prevent plaque buildup.
  • Floss your teeth everyday to remove food between your teeth that brushing can’t reach.
  • Use an antimicrobial mouthwash to help prevent gingivitis.
  • Brush your tongue or use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria.
  • Eat nutritious, balanced meals and healthy snacks.
