How do I prevent cavities?

Cavities result when foods containing sugars and carbohydrates such as breads, cereals, milk, sodas, fruits, cake, and candy are left on the teeth. As bacteria in the mouth digest these foods, they produce acid that combines with the bacteria, food particles, and saliva to form plaque that clings to teeth. When plaque sits on the teeth for prolonged periods of time, the acids it contains decay the teeth creating holes called cavities.

Good oral hygiene removes bacteria and the leftover food particles that combine to create cavities.

To prevent tooth decay and cavities in infants/toddlers:

  • Use a wet gauze or clean washcloth to wipe the plaque from teeth and gums.
  • Avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle filled with anything other than water. See Baby Bottle Tooth Decay for more information.

To prevent tooth decay and cavities in older children:

  • Brush at least twice daily
  • Floss regularly
  • Don't go to bed without brushing your teeth
  • Reduce the number of snacks containing sugar
  • Lower your intake of high-sugar foods

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends visits every six months to a children's dentist, beginning at your child's first birthday. Routine visits will start your child on a lifetime of good dental health.

Our dentists may also recommend protective sealants or home fluoride treatments for your child. Sealants can be applied to your child's molars to prevent decay on hard to clean surfaces.
