How do I prevent cavities?Cavities result when foods containing sugars and carbohydrates such as breads, cereals, milk, sodas, fruits, cake, and candy are left on the teeth. As bacteria in the mouth digest these foods, they produce acid that combines with the bacteria, food particles, and saliva to form plaque that clings to teeth. When plaque sits on the teeth for prolonged periods of time, the acids it contains decay the teeth creating holes called cavities. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends visits every six months to a children's dentist, beginning at your child's first birthday. Routine visits will start your child on a lifetime of good dental health. Our dentists may also recommend protective sealants or home fluoride treatments for your child. Sealants can be applied to your child's molars to prevent decay on hard to clean surfaces. |
